Hamlets Emotions, Actions, and Importance in the Nunnery Scene Essay

Hamlet's Emotions, Actions, and Importance in the Nunnery Scene Like sweet chimes clanked, out of time and brutal Hamlet's trust is double-crossed by the individuals who are dearest to his heart (III.i.87). The topic of double-crossing flourishes before the Shakespeare's catastrophe starts, when Hamlet's uncle kills his dad and weds his mom. These gigantic disloyalties, alongside other pointed duplicities, legitimize a considerable lot of Hamlet's words and activities. A striking case of the misleading Hamlet suffers can be found in act three, scene one of Hamlet: the convent scene. At the point when Hamlet ventures through the gateway he strolls into a trap of mysteries, duplicity, and contemptibility. Resolved to find the idea of Hamlet's franticness, the lord and Polonius have called Hamlet to a spot where they realize he will run into Ophelia under their perception; the scene is a set-up. Hamlet is kept an eye on by his stepfather and misled by his affection at this time of pitiless misdirection. In Olivier's 1948 film rendition of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the religious shelter scene permits Hamlet to express his dissatisfaction without going up against his adversaries. Hamlet enters the scene completely mindful of its created nature, similar to an entertainer having his spot on the stage. The following execution is that of a narcissistic youngster wining just to hear the sound of his own voice; Olivier's Hamlet has no genuine connection with any of different characters in the scene. Olivier's decision to concentrate on Hamlet and his sentiments, instead of the activity going on around him, is featured in the cloister scene and obvious in the whole play Branagh, then again considers Hamlet to be an energizing story of elegant interest and duplicity. Branagh' s Hamlet's really influenced by the activity unfurling Olivier's open and theoretical religious shelter... ...with the double dealing of everyone around him. Branagh's endeavor to extend the extent of his Hamlet, past Olivier's translation of the play as an investigate the principle character's brain, permits him to create a Nunnery scene unmistakably more captivating than Olivier's. In spite of the fact that it offers intriguing understanding into Hamlet's psyche, Olivier's Nunnery Scene offers the crowd no plot headway and little activity. By sharp differentiation, Branagh's rendering unfurls to uncover energizing turns in the story and riveting clash among the characters as they effectively sell out Hamlet's trust. Auditory Localization Essay -- Hearing Sound Perception Essays

Sound-related Localization Sound-related confinement is the capacity to perceive the area from which a sound is radiating (Goldstine, 2002). There are numerous down to earth purposes behind considering sound-related restriction. For instance, past research expresses that obvious signs are vital in finding a specific sound (Culling, 2000). In any case, daze individuals don't have the advantage of sight to assist them with finding a sound. Thusly, the capacity to find sound dependent on sound-related capacity is significant. It is likewise essential to examine diverse sound-related procedures. For instance, when reading a path for a visually impaired individual to move through a domain, it is useful to realize that individuals can most precisely find sounds that happen legitimately before them; sounds that are far away, to the side, or behind the head are the to the least extent liable to be appropriately found (Goldstein, 2002). Three facilitate frameworks are used when endeavoring to find a particular sound. The azimuth facilitate decides whether a sound is situated to one side or the privilege of an audience. The height arrange separates between sounds that are up or down comparative with the audience. At long last, the separation facilitate decides the distance away a sound is from the beneficiary (Goldstine, 2002). Various parts of the arrange frameworks are additionally basic to sound confinement. For instance, while recognizing the azimuth in a sound, three acoustic signals are utilized: ghastly prompts, interaural time contrasts (ITD), and interaural level contrasts (ILD) (Lorenzi, Gatehouse, and Lever, 1999). When managing sound localizaton, otherworldly prompts are teh conveyance of frequencies coming to teh ear. #BrownPeopleProblems in Essay Form

#BrownPeopleProblems in Essay Form Is it just me, or is the sudden wave of not-quite-memoirs  by actors of South Asian descent weighing down your TBR pile? Granted, there have been a lot of celebrity confessionals  in recent years. Everyone from Lena Dunham to Tina Fey has done a book (or three) of essays, and we can expect upcoming insights from Gabourey Sidibe, Anna Kendrick, and  Amy Schumer whose book reportedly fetched $8 to 10 million soon enough. But with the brown folks in Hollywood, its almost like their Desi parents said, Yeah, sure, youre on TV and all. But my friends wont think my kids a success until you have a book out, too. (Trust me, I feel their pain. You are never good enough.) And so what do they do? Essays, of course. We rounded em up with a few universal truths brown folks hold to be self-evident. Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling The follow-up to her 2011 collection,  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, this new collection picks up where the other one left off, talking about female friendships, dating dilemmas, cultivating a creative career (career being the operative word there!), and, of course, body image, because no one will let the girl slide without talking about that. And hence, this  Confessional Quote:  â€œPeople sometimes sweetly say that I have child-bearing hips, but what they really mean is that I have hips that will definitely knock over your drink if you are sitting next to me on a plane and I have to get up to use the bathroom.” Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari Parks And Recreation star Ansari who has a Netflix original series,  Master of None,  debuting in November is expectedly angsty and self-deprecating in this book of dating advice for generation Tinder. But sadly, Ansari seems just as lost as the rest of us. He just has a funnier story to tell at the end of that date from hell.  Case in point,  his take on the perils of online dating while famous:  â€œAs a public figure, I have never considered doing any online dating. I always figured there was a chance someone who was a stalker type would use it as an opportunity to kidnap and murder me… Maybe my stalker (probably an Indian dude) sees my profile and thinks,  Oh, here’s that comedian guy on OkCupid. FINALLY, I have a way to reach out to him and slowly plot his murder.  He sends me a message pretending to be a woman. I see the profile. ‘She’ likes tacos and  Game of Thrones. I’m very excited.” Yes, My Accent Is Real by Kunal Nayyar Nayyar, whos played the female-phobic astrophysicist Raj on  The Big Bang Theory for eight years now, delves deep into the immigrant  experience he came to the United States as a undergrad business student in his memoir, which digs into dating, his days as a theater kid, his rise to fame, meeting his beauty queen wife (who thought  Big Bang was a porno), and even that Indian head bobble he taught Conan OBrien about last year on the  Late Show. Lets take a second and talk about the Indian Head Bobble. Yes, Im going to go there. Because yes, its true that Indians bobble their heads all the time. Thats not a racist thing to say because a) I am Indian, and b) bobbling our heads is a very important and sophisticated form of communication. When you bobble your head, youre not really saying yes, and youre not really saying no. So much is communicated and so much is not communicated by the bobble. It could mean: Im full. Im hungry. Im confused. Im happy. I understand. Talk to me. Stop talk ing. Never talk to me again. Okay, so perhaps the book meanders a bit. Still, some fun dating dramas here and there. And for good measure, heres a brown celebrity  confessional wed like to see, STAT. Geeks, Girls and X-Files Underoos by Kumail Nanjiani Stand-up comic Nanjiani best known as Dinesh on Silicon Valley  has a lot to say, as evidenced by the video game and  X-Files themed  podcasts he runs with his writer-producer wife Emily Gordon. But his stand-up hits closer to home, whether you call it his native Pakistan, or stateside, in LA or in Iowa, where he went to school. Hed have plenty to expound on. Case in point? Bonding with his now-wifes parents at the hospital while she was in a coma, an experience he and Gordon are immortalizing in script form. I  hung out with her parents while she was in a coma for eight days! That’s when I  told my parents, Hey! Good news/bad news. Actually, for you guys, bad news/good news? I  dunno, anyway: I’m in love with a white girl and she’s in a coma. I  don’t know how you’re going to take either of those.' I mean, how could you  not want to read that? The First Amendment Of Our Constitution - 1511 Words

Too often conversations are taken as harmful hate speech that needs to be censored. Although a large amount of things that people find offensive are completely unnecessary we can’t go censoring it to make the problem go away. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean you can say anything you want to say but it does mean that you have the right to say most things, and most times speech cannot be censored no matter how appalling it is. Sometimes speech needs to be censored, but there is a big difference between illegal and legal speech that we need to make sure we know. An important thing to know about freedom of speech is it does not actually protect anything we want to say. However freedom of speech is something that the United States holds high. The first amendment of our constitution is one of the most important amendments we have to protect us. The first amendment gives us the right to free speech with very few limits. Even though this may not be the best policy it is important we protect any speech so long as it is not harming anyone. The constitution says â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Literature Review And Hypothesis Development - 852 Words

2. Literature Review and hypothesis development The topic of valuation of early-stage companies, patents, and technologies have been a topic of study since the late 1980’s. Since the work published by Amit et al (1990) a body of management science literature was published around the value relevance of non-financial information that quantifies the human capital of the founding team. Amit et al posit that In Initial Human and Financial Capital as Predictors of New Venture Performance, Cooper et al (1994), reviewed a sample of 2994 entrepreneurs across various sectors, high-tech and non-high-tech, to determine whether an entrepreneur’s upbringing, experiences and education had a statistically significant relationship with the probability of success. Zacharakis and Meyer’s research (1998) into the investment decision-making processes of VC investors is particularly pertinent to whether VC investments can be systematically improved and whether there are any gaps between understanding of their procedures and what happens in reality. Zacharakis, via studying 53 VCs from the two main start-up hubs in the United States (Silicon Valley and Colorado Front Range), establishes that there is a gap between the factors that affect VCs’ decision-making in reality and the factors that VCs identify as pertinent to their decision-making. Hiv Infection In Indonesia Health And Social Care Essay Free Essays

string(107) " in covering with the sexual transmittal of HIV infection, and besides transmittal in shooting drug users\." Indonesia has among the fastest turning prevalence of people infected with HIV in Asiatic parts. However, the prevalence in Indonesia itself is still low: harmonizing to the Data and Information Centre from Indonesian Ministry of Health, around 0.2 per centum from the entire population. We will write a custom essay sample on Hiv Infection In Indonesia Health And Social Care Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, since Indonesia is the universe 4th most thickly settled state, this figure means that presently there are a sum of about 200.000 people populating with HIV in Indonesia ( UNAIDS, 2007 ) . From the informations in Indonesian Ministry of Health ( 2006 ) , we can besides see that 82 % of known people populating with HIV/AIDS is work forces and are concentrated within specific groups with specific behavior in the population: approximately 50.3 % of HIV infection instances are from shooting drug users, 40.3 % from unprotected heterosexual sex, while 4.2 % from unprotected homosexual sex. There are besides several surveies that show the HIV infections epidemic work forces who have sex with work forces communities in developing Asiatic states, including Indonesia ( Pisani et al. , 2004 ; Toole et al. , 2006 ; Wong, Zhang, Wu, Kong, A ; Ling, 2006 ) . To reply with the HIV infections pandemic, the authorities, with the presidential edict figure 36/1994, established the National AIDS Commission. This committee were created to forestall and to take incorporate and co-ordinated, inter-sectoral actions against AIDS in Indonesia. This committee is headed by the Ministry of Welfare and besides with the coordination of other Ministries, such as Ministry of Health and Ministry of Internal Affairs ( Presiden Republik Indonesia, 1994 ) . It is aimed to forestall and to take actions against AIDS harmonizing to the current ordinances, in conformity with the planetary scheme set by the United Nations, and besides to increase community consciousness for AIDS and bettering the intersectoral, integrated and coordinated bar and actions against AIDS In 2003, another presidential edict was set up to better this committee. It stated that the committee actions are organizing steps in actions against AIDS, including bar, instruction, wellness service, surveillance, and control of AIDS, epidemiological observation on vulnerable populations at hazard of infecting HIV, wellness instruction, wellness run and regional and international cooperation in forestalling against AIDS ( Presiden Republik Indonesia, 2006 ) . 3. Is it bettering the status? The plan set up by the cardinal authorities, regional authorities, non governmental administration, and the support received from foreign givers in the signifier of HIV consciousness and bar plans throughout Indonesia have been bettering some of the state of affairs of HIV infection in Indonesia. A study on rubber usage in sex industry in Indonesia in 2004-2005 reported that 61 % of sex workers in whorehouses said that they had use a rubber in the last clip they sold sex. A prevalence of 57 % was found in sex workers who didnit work in a whorehouse. ( UNAIDS/WHO, 2008 ) . For shooting drug users, the plan is focused on cut downing the usage of non-sterile injecting equipment. In Jakarta and Medan, where plans such as these are making the injecting drug users, the study found out that more than 80 % of shooting drug users said that they ever used clean acerate leafs ( UNAIDS/WHO, 2008 ) . The injury decrease method, which has been set up as a theoretical account for Indonesian authorities to undertake the turning HIV infections from shooting drug users group in Indonesia, was established by the Sentani Commitment ( see Appendix ) , as an understanding between the National AIDS Commission and regional authoritiess ( National AIDS Commission, 2004 ) . While plans to forestall HIV infections in female sex workers and shooting drug users have been demoing some grade of success, another vulnerable populations is still hold lower precedence in AIDS bar plan. A study in 2004 mentioned HIV infection degrees of 2.5 % in work forces who have sex with work forces, 3.6 % among male sex workers, and 22 % on waria ( Indonesian term for transgender ) sex workers in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Almost of them are practising hazardous sexual behavior. It is stated that 65 % of the male sex workers and 53 % of work forces who have sex with work forces in Indonesia reported holding insecure anal sex with male spouses and besides 54 % of the male sex workers reported that they had sex with adult females in the anterior twelvemonth ( Pisani et al. , 2004 ) . However, when we look at the tendencies in the undermentioned figure, we can clearly see the increasing figure of new instances of HIV infection found in Indonesia until 2006. ( Pusat Data dan Informasi Departemen Kesehatan Republik Indonesia, 2006 ) Besides we have another graph demoing the theoretical account to foretell the figure of HIV infections in Jakarta, merely from the informations taken from one population: the shooting drug users. ( UNAIDS/WHO, 2008 ) From the above graph, we can see that the state of affairs in Indonesia is still far from bettering. In add-on, although the overall HIV infection prevalence in Indonesia is still low, if we look into the parts of Indonesia, we have a figure every bit high as 2.4 % as the grownup prevalence rate of HIV infection in the Papua state ( Pusat Data dan Informasi Departemen Kesehatan Republik Indonesia, 2006 ) . The Ministry of Health vision of Healthy Indonesia by the twelvemonth 2010, which set a end of 0.9 per centum of maximal prevalence in 2010 ( Menteri Kesehatan RI, 2003 ) in all parts of Indonesia, seems farfetched. In the undermentioned subdivision, we will discourse jobs in the execution of the policy for HIV bar in Indonesia. 4. Problem in plan of HIV bar Although the authorities already put up a committee accountable straight to the president, we can see that the job with HIV infections in Indonesia is still turning. In the undermentioned, I would wish to discourse several points why the policy against HIV in Indonesia is still unable to accomplish its end ( such as in the Healthy Indonesia by 2010 ) . There are 4 chief jobs that I would discourse, two related to the mark of the plan, in covering with the sexual transmittal of HIV infection, and besides transmittal in shooting drug users. You read "Hiv Infection In Indonesia Health And Social Care Essay" in category "Essay examples" The others two related to the decentralization procedure in Indonesia and on support. 4.1. Extensive sex web and geographical difference Sexual activity industry in Indonesia itself is extended even though their legality is questioned. A study on 1994-1995 found that there were 71,281 sex workers in Indonesia ( Endang, Ivan, Walter, Noni, A ; et al. , 2002 ) , even though the existent figure should be higher. Prostitution is non allowed in Indonesia, and sex workers who were caught beging in the streets can be sent to a rehabilitation cantonment. Nonetheless, whorehouses are slightly recognized particularly in the large metropoliss: they are non illegal, there are no regulations sing this, the illegality of harlotry merely concern on those who sell sex on the street. Therefore the local authoritiess have regulated sex works in these whorehouses, supplying wellness installations and put certain restrictions. However, this ill-defined position for whorehouses can present a job for keeping sustainable wellness plan in forestalling HIV infections. The huge parts in Indonesia besides made an obstruction in the plan to forestall HIV infections. In most Indonesian states, such as in Java, Bali, Sumatra, and others, the common transmittal of HIV infections is through shooting drug users. However, in Papua state, we have a different transmittal form. Papua is equaling Jakarta in footings of HIV infections prevalence: a prevalence of 2.4 % for overall grownup HIV prevalence, and this could make to every bit high as 3.2 % in distant Highlandss of the Papua state ( UNAIDS/WHO, 2008 ) . In this part, unprotected sex is the chief manner of transmittal. Based on informations from the UNAIDS/WHO, thereis a high proportion of work forces engaged in bad sex, with 25 % reported that they had sex with non regular spouse ( over half of it were paid sex ) and 20 % had more than one sexual spouse. From this study we can besides see that the usage of rubber is uncommon. It is reported that merely 14 % who said that they use rubbers for paid sex, and even merely 3 % said that they had usage rubber every clip in old month. Another job with the Papua state is sexual force. It was mentioned that 12 % of adult females has experience sexual force, even from their domestic spouse. Therefore, to forestall increasing HIV infection in Papua, the chief co ncern is to supply better sex instruction and besides to advance and to administer rubber throughout Papua part. ( UNAIDS, 2007 ) 4.2. Harm decrease policy for shooting drug user Even though the term of injury decrease itself is still controversial, whether it is a wide term of steps embracing schemes of restricting supply and minimising injury, merely like in Australia, or merely purely merely a portion of the scheme to undertake drug maltreatment specifically to understate the injury of utilizing drug ( Ball, 2007 ) . Harmonizing to Beyrer, Kumarasamy and Pizer ( 2005 ) , the jobs with the execution of harm decrease policy in Asia, including Indonesia, can be categorised into three classs. The first 1 is this policy is considered as a manner to state that it is wholly right to hold people who abuse drugs and that this behavior is merely an look from several people that tend to take hazards. The focal point of the injury decrease ( at least in the narrow definition ) so is to understate the injury from utilizing drugs irrespective whether the position of utilizing drug is right or incorrect or wherever the drug comes from, since it is the wellness sector itself would bear the brunt if HIV infections ( and besides Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections ) spreads from shooting drug users. Whether drug dependence itself pose a serious wellness job to the community, where increasing drug user would besides means increasing figure of neurologic disablement and psychosocial job, would be tackled by the r estriction of supply of drugs, non by the injury decrease system. I think that if Asiatic states, particularly Indonesia, want to to the full implement harm decrease policy, both understating the supply and pull offing the injury of drug maltreatment should set into pattern. Therefore, the injury from bad pattern of shooting drug users ( for illustration needle sharing ) can be minimised while effects of drugs to single and society itself can besides be minimised through controlling/ cut downing supply of drugs in the black market. However, it is interesting to see in Iran, another Asiatic states with high Muslim population, merely like Indonesia, that the caput of Persian Judiciary declare, sing on this quandary between public wellness and drug control, after sing the Islamic rule of idoing no injury to oneself or othersi and ithe worst injury is eliminated by a lesser harmi , that the public wellness is more of import in commanding the spread of HIV infections ( as the worst injury ) instead than command on drug maltreatment ( which considered as a lesser injury ) ( Ball, 2007 ) . The 2nd obstruction of harm decrease policy, as in many Asiatic states, is the legal system ( Beyrer et al. , 2005 ) . The current legal system in Indonesia still considers that the maltreatment of drugs is illegal and can be punished. The job arise with this is that the harm decrease policy is normally set up several topographic points for shooting drug user to entree clean acerate leafs and besides topographic points to dispose them decently. Injecting drug users besides need topographic point for them to acquire some intervention, instruction, and referral. If puting up these topographic points can present a menace in the security of the community and besides put on the lining the injecting drug users being caught by the constabulary, there should be some via media between the rights of shooting drug users and besides the rights of community for security. Therefore if we want to put up a safe oasis for shooting drug users so that they can safely derive entree of clean acerate leaf s, intervention, instruction and referral, the supplier of such topographic point must be able to supply legal protection for their client from being arrested in that topographic points. Obviously we should merely set safe sphere for shooting drug users everyplace, but we must understand foremost where shooting drug users needed largely. Another facet of the legal system is related to the position of possessing injection equipment: eg syringe. Although in Indonesia it is non illegal to transport needle syringe, nevertheless, it is regulated under prescription merely. In several states, there are Torahs that prohibit people to possess injecting equipment, but finally experience from developed states shows that if this ordinance is abolished, it truly removes the pattern of needle sharing between shooting drug users while does non truly hold much consequence on the prevalence of new user ( Deany, 2000 ) . In add-on to that, if the legal system can work to suit the injury decrease system, the constabulary can besides move an of import portion in HIV bar among shooting drug users. Police so should mention drug users for intervention instead than imprison them. Finally, the last obstruction is on fiscal support and coverage of harm decrease plan. Other than supplying a safe topographic point for shooting drug users, a plan on harm decrease of drug maltreatment must supply a continued supply of clean acerate leafs. They besides need human resources to run the plan such as checkups and paramedics, counselors, and others. Possibly it is difficult to set some money from the budget merely to isatisfyi the demand ( or rights? ) of shooting drug users, nevertheless, this is needed to forestall farther job in public wellness. And this job in support will be discussed in the following subdivision. From this we can see that the job is much clear: whether the society accepts such behaviors and trades with the injury caused by it and whether the authorities is willing to carry on such plan. 4.3. Problem in regional execution In 2007, 23 provincial authoritiess reduced their HIV budget by a sum of 5.72 billion rupiahs, to be put toward the outgo of regional election, even though President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for an addition in the stateis budget for HIV/AIDS during a cabinet meeting in July. In Papua, for illustration, the provincial authorities allocated Rp 10 one million millions for its regional AIDS committee in 2007, but merely 1 per centum of the budget was realised. The authorities did non see HIV/AIDS a precedence because the figure of septic people remained little compared to patients of other diseases. In December 2007 the Ministry of Health recorded 6,066 people with HIV and 11,141 with AIDS. The National AIDS Commission said it needs more than Rp 1.5 trillion in 2008 to cover with the virus, which most of the budget would be spent on bar plans, but the cardinal authorities has promised to supply Rp 1 trillion merely. The committee estimated the figure of people with HIV/AIDS would make 400,000 in 2010 and one million in 2015 across the state. ( The Jakarta Post, 2008 ) . 4.4. Problem on support and sustainibility In relation to the old treatment on regional execution of the policy, we can see that it was expected for the regional authorities to increase their disbursement on publicities against HIV infections. This is because Indonesia is still depending on foreign givers to undertake the issue of HIV infections. Foreign givers provide up to 70 per centum of financess to forestall HIV infections in Indonesia ( Pathoni, 2008 ) . However, givers such as the United States and Australia are expected to diminish AIDS-related aid partially because they now consider Indonesia a middle-income state. This means that plans on HIV bar in Indonesia should stress on sustainability. We shall look at one illustration: the Aksi Stop AIDS plan. The Aksi Stop AIDS plan is a plan of HIV bar where USAID, in cooperation with the Family Health International and working together with the authorities of Indonesia through the National Commission of AIDS ( Family Health International, 2007 ) . This plan is aimed to cut down incidence of STI/HIV/AIDS in most-at-risk groups ( MARGs ) thereby assisting to forestall a generalize epidemic and decreased incidence of STI/HIV/AIDS within the general population of Papua ( Family Health International, 2007, p. 5 ) . The plan itself were late came to an terminal in September 2008, where it was expected that we have ( Family Health International, 2007, p. 5 ) : i Increased coverage of most-at-risk groups with trim intercessions and improved utilizations of hazard decrease behaviors, patterns, and entree to and usage of services ; and i Increased ability of implementing bureaus to on a regular basis supervise, evaluate and better plan public presentation, therefore accomplishing expanded coverage. We can see that from this illustration that sustainability of the plan is really of import. After the plan ended, and we have the end product of improved implementing bureaus in HIV bar, therefore we can anticipate the result is the continuity of the HIV bar plan. 5. Decision In decision, we can see that although Indonesian policy on HIV bar is already set, they have to cover some of the issues which are different from other states: the extended sexual web, the geographical difference in HIV infection prevalence and chief method of transmittal, jobs in implementing the harm decrease policy for shooting drug user, jobs arose with decentralization, where regional authoritiess donit prioritise HIV bars, and besides the job with support and sustainability. In covering with the increasing figure if HIV infections in Indonesia, therefore we need to develop a better scheme which turn toing these issues. Violence In The Arts Essay Example For Students

Violence In The Arts Essay Nowadays, it is hard to turn on a television program, catch a movie or buy your younger sibling a video game without encountering a warning for extreme violence. Everyday, our lives are exposed to violence on the screen, whether it is in the latest Sopranos episode or even watching the six oclock news. For quite a while now, people have been demanding that stricter censorship be placed on the media, especially those programs and video games that can easily be obtained by the youth, due to their feelings that this violence can influence people to act out. However, this is not a new idea. Back in ancient Greece, the philosopher Plato believed that exposure to the emotions of the arts (especially drama) would encourage people to act out violent emotions portrayed in the drama. As documented in his work The Republic, Plato believed strongly that the perfect life was comprised of total balance and harmony in ones mindset and that any stimulated emotions would result in an imbalance. The first theorist to challenge Platos idea was his well-known student, Aristotle. We will write a custom essay on Violence In The Arts specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Aristotle felt that exposure to the strong emotions of the arts had a positive psychological effect on people because it gave them a chance to let out any emotional frustrations that they might have bottled up inside. I concur with the ideas of Plato, being that the media has become such an influential authority in our society, and the constant exposure to violent behavior within the media is creating numbness to it, especially within our children, who are less able to distinguish between factual and fictional. Our society, beginning with a childs parents, should become stricter with Limiting exposure to violent visual entertainment, and only allow a moderate, if any, amount of violence to be seen by impressionable children and young adults. Drama had only recently developed in Ancient Greece when Plato began speaking against it, however it was already a popular part of Greek tradition. The somewhat violent plots that were also deeply entrenched in religious and family tradition, showed morbid situations; such as Oedipus Rex in which a son kills his father and marries his mother. Plato perceived the dramas as dangerous, because he felt that they created confusion, miscommunication and ignorance. He also felt that the entire worlds evils came from a defective sense of reality and that these dramas promoted that. For example, take a young child who grew up somewhat isolated from the outside world and whose only outlet to our society is through the media. His steady contact with violent programs (which in the end, show a happy conclusion no matter what happens throughout) may convince him that this type of behavior is normal and accepted. Plato was concerned especially about the influence that drama and even pornography would have on children, because he felt that their minds were not developed to the full extent in order to differentiate between the right and wrong that they see in the dramas. Many people will be quick to agree that a child should not watch a rated R action movie, yet they still allow them to view a Saturday morning cartoon in which the main character gets run over every episode and still comes back the next week. This can create a faulty understanding of reality to a child, as well as an unsuspecting adult, because it does not clarify that death is final. What about the movies that emulate and perhaps glorify the lives of drug dealers and gangs? Are they encouraging one to participate in this type of lifestyle by making it seem cool and their answer to their life situation or are they simply depicting reality of what goes on in todays inner cities? These questions are similar to an old saying: which came first, the chicken or the egg? .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .postImageUrl , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:hover , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:visited , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:active { border:0!important; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:active , .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197 .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uca9a4ef31943b6e16170bc4a904d9197:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Preserving Our Earth EssayThe skewed perspective portrayed by movies, television, and video games can create a lack of sensitivity to emotional and/or physical harm. It may even cause them to want to emulate the kind of lifestyle they are seeing, thinking that it is a reflection of real life. Aristotle, on the other hand, believed that the best dramas were those which an ordinary person greatly misjudges, because this allowed the ordinary people who viewed it to realize the error and make it a moral learning experience a moral laboratory in which we can see our inner urges acted out and learn from the tragic consequences. (Rosenstand, pg. 52) I agree somewhat with Platos views on censorship, since you never know exactly how someone will react to viewing a violent situation and whether they will be able to use their common sense and judgment to refrain from copying the actions of the characters. There have been many examples of copycats who have gotten their ideas from watching a violent film, but many will still argue that the majority is simply coincidence. In the end of the thriller Scream, Billy makes an important comment to Sidney, telling her not to blame the movies! Movies dont create psychos! Movies make psychos more creative! . However, a point that must be understood is that even though Aristotle was for the viewing of emotionally charged dramas, he also advocated a moderation of these violent stories. We should remember that the drama that Aristotle recommended as beneficial was not available twenty-four hours a day, as it is on a TV set; Greek dramas were originally performed once a year? . (Rosenstand, pg. ) If Aristotle were around today, he probably would advise about the effects of being overly exposed to the elements of moral decay in the visual entertainment and suggest a need for censorship as well. Viewing a documentary on the Civil War in a students classroom is one thing, since those are factual events that took place in our societys history, but allowing a child to play the video game Mortal Combat on a daily basis is unnecessary and does not provide an educational experience or an emotional outlet when constantly employed as a means of entertainment. Plato felt that censorship was necessary, especially for childrens materials, because he didnt trust people to distinguish between right and wrong on their own. In order to avoid a complete and rigid censorship put on by our societys government, parents should on their own monitor what their children are exposed to. I believe that the parent should decide what amount of violence, if any, they want their child to be exposed to and regulate that amount strictly until that child has reached an age in which he or she can determine between fantasy/reality, good/bad. Parents should also explain that the reality that is depicted in films, television programs and video games are not necessarily how real life is conducted. Parents with young children may want to compare it to a fairy tale, such as Hansel and Gretel, to illustrate a moralistic point. I feel that in order to reduce the chances of violent behavior later on in a persons life, they need to be taught, as a child that the way they see disagreements and issues being handled in violent entertainment is not the appropriate manner of solving them. This way the child will grow to understand and refrain from acting out the emotions represented in their favorite action movie or video game. In summary, I feel that after reflecting on Plato and Aristotles views on the problem of over stimulation of the emotions by drama, I found that I have been influenced by both of their opinions. Both philosophers made valid points, which should be recognized by todays society.

Have you ever owned a CD that never left your CD player? That is how I feel about Limp Bizkits new album. I think it is glued there for life! Anyway, the bands music is very different from any that I have heard. The music just gets inside you and gives you a boost of energy. When the bands CD hit the charts, it was a huge success. Their first single off the disc was Counterfeit. It had good air play on the radio. Their second single was Nobody loves me. The song is good, but personally my favs are Indigo Flow and Faith. Limp Bizkit is a very good, popular underground band that has kept their underground image. They dont let fame go to their head, like some other bands I wont mention. In other words, go buy it. You wont regret it, believe me

Compare young peoples expectations for marriage and the reality of Essay

Compare young peoples expectations for marriage and the reality of married life - Essay Example Nevertheless, compromising is not an easy issue as presumed by the young people. Married couples always have many challenges that they find it hard to compromise, instead they fight and argue over many things such as income, sex, personality and children handling which may even lead to divorce or separation (Bhalla 56-60). Additionally, many young people expect to have their leisure time which they would spend together by going on picnics, dating on weekends. Unfortunately, there is always a lot of work to do at home such as cleaning especially on weekends which denies the couple ample time to enjoy leisure. Also there are always events to attend on weekends such as weddings and birthdays as well as inadequate vacation time that deny them pleasurable time (Bhalla 56-60). Moreover, young people normally expect to have enough money that would help them buy big houses and nice cars but the reality is that money is never enough. There are lots of things whose budgets are assumed such as groceries and electronics that impose financial constrains to the already hiking prices of homes. It is therefore apparent that more money is always required in marriage than what is normally expected by young people (Bhalla 56-60). For many youths expecting too much than marriage offers, it is important to learn about the differences between expectations and reality. Knowing and understanding reality in marriage may make young couples live an ideal life in

MGT Week 9 SA Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

MGT Week 9 SA - Research Paper Example When a particular question has to be answered, as in the case study of Florida State University, triangulation methods are suitable. The mixed approach study revealed how different methodologies can be combined to enhance research results’ validity. Qualitative researches are more suitable for exploring broad matters whether it is a perspective or a particular question while quantitative researches are more useful for results that can be measured or calculated. Observation is a key tool that is used in qualitative researches for getting the required information. Personal observation in qualitative research methodology adds reliability to the results because minor details are taken into account that are normally missed out in quantitative methodology. When a mixed approach is used to carry out the research, benefits of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies are combined which enhance the research. Drugs In The Music Industry Essay -- essays research papers

Drugs in the Music Industry The Music World-glamorous, fast paced, and a world most of us will never be part of. But if we knew what it entailed, would we still want to be? The whole world seems to be building itself around drugs more and more every day, and music industry isn't immune. In fact, music is one of the most influential art forms of today's society, and drugs, especially to today's youth, just add to the attractiveness of it all. In the last two or three years, drugs, especially heroin, have risen in use dramatically. Kurt Cobain was the most high-profile drug-related rock star since the 1970's and was still battling heroin addiction when he committed suicide in 1994. Along with him, his wife Courtney Love made it fashionable to be a "junkie". In the last year, Stone Temple Pilot's singer Scott Weiland and Depeche Mode singer David Gahan, among others, have been arrested for cocaine or heroin possession. The number of top bands that have been linked to heroin through a member's overdose, arrest, admitted use or recovery is staggering: Smashing pumpkins, Everclear, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, Blind Melon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Breeders, Alice in Chains, Sex Pistols, Sublime, Iggy Pop, the list goes on and on. Together, these bands have sold more than 60 million albums(Newsweek pgs 50 & 53). Since kids emulate popular musicians, what is there to keep them from emulating their drug use? Moreover, what's to keep the majority of the population from doing the same? In the 60's and 70's, drug use was never spoken of nor did anyone admit that it was a problem. Nowadays, there is not a person in the world who hasn't heard about the rising drug use. But what are they doing about it? Back in the 80's, higher prices, the fear of contracting AIDS, and lower purity kept drugs out of the mainstream. Now, drugs are cheaper and easier to get then ever, being imported into the country at double the rate it was in the 1980's. Unfortunately, the outsider's view of drug use isn't the harsh reality. Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker are among the many to die from heroin and other drug addictions. Drugs seem to make you a funnier, wiser, cooler person, but what the younger generation fails to realize is that they are fatal. Despite this, drug... ...are easy because they are wealthy, popular, and sublimely happy. Being rich and famous isn't all it's cracked up to be. They lead normal lives, have kids and pay bills just as we do, but this is still no excuse to put your life into your own hands. The music industry may be finally facing up to the truth that drug abuse has become a serious problem, though. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gathered in 1996 to discuss what could be done about it. The sense of crisis has been growing since Kurt Cobain committed suicide, blamed at least partly on his heroin abuse.(Time p57)Expressions of concern are easy to come by, but the chances for meaningful industry action are less clear. Record executives refuse to be drug police, especially in a society where drug abuse has long been accepted, and even condoned, as part of the creative process. Geffen Records has retained a drug counselor for it's musicians who seek help. (Time p 58). But the industry must recognize that pressure from the label to keep tutoring and recording can blow a drug problem out of proportion. It is a minimal step, but at least a start toward trying to keep musicians healthy, productive, and alive.

Budweiser Essay

Budweiser Lager was first brewed in 1876 by E. Anheuser & Co., St. Louis. Today, AnheuserBusch is the largest brewer in the world in terms of volume, and it competes across a diverse range of markets. The company oversees more than 30 different beer brands, including the domestic market leader Budweiser, a number of other alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, a group of theme parks, and a real estate enterprise While retaining its brewing traditions, the company has adopted new technological traditions that improve its business and marketing effectiveness. In 1997, chairman August Busch III vowed to make his company a leader in mining its customers’ buying patterns. The key to Anheuser-Busch’s real-time analysis of marketing effectiveness is timely data: getting information back from wholesalers and retailers on what is selling where and when. â€Å"Wholesaler and store-level data has become the lifeblood of our organization,† said Joe Patti, Anheuser’s vice president for retail planning and category management. Therefore, Anheuser-Busch created BudNET to connect to wholesalers, retailers, and other AnheuserBusch business partners. The system handles sales reporting, customer development, retail promotion notices, and weekly sales forecasting, as well as a wide array of logistics-related functions. BudNET is the information channel for an Anheuser-Busch system called WEARS (Wholesaler Equity Agreement Reporting System). Through BudNET, the delivery people of the 700 U.S. distributors of Budweiser can become the eyes and ears of the brewer. WEARS and BudNET do much more than just keep tabs on the flow if icy-cold Bud off retailers’ refrigerated shelves. Using portable transaction computers, the delivery people also log data on computing products, identifying what else is on the retailers’ shelves. At the end of the day, Anheuser-Busch gets the data and looks for trends. â€Å"If Anheuser-Busch loses shelf space in a store in ClarksVille, Tennessee, they know it right away,† said Joe Thompson, president of Independent Beverage Group, a research and consulting firm. â€Å"They’re better at this game than anyone, even Coca-Cola.† Understanding consumers means more than just gathering data on your own product or on your competitor’s product. Anheuser-Busch also analyzes syndicated bar-code scan data gathered by Information Resources Inc. (IRI), to track consumer purchasing behavior across a full range of products. Anheuser-Busch successfully launched low-carb Michelob Ultra after seeing data on consumer shifts in dietary habits in other food groups. Timely, fine-grain data also help Anheuser-Busch’s marketing and product assortment. With store-level data, the company can create targeted marketing materials. For example, gay models appear on posters in San Francisco’s Castro district, but not on those in the Mission district. Better data also help predict local sales during holidays, such as knowing that Atlantans celebrate Fourth of July more than St. Patrick’s Day. Anheuser-Busch know where cans sell better than bottles (blue-collar neighborhoods), and helped the company launch a range of Latin-inspired beverages such as Tequiza and Sauza Diablo for the growing Hispanic market. Anheuser-Busch uses a variety of internal and external data sources – including consumer demographics, POS, and market data – to guide product assortment decisions. AnheuserBusch uses the six-step, industry-standard best practice called Efficient Item Assortment (EIA) that is published by the Food Marketing Institute. Software, co-developed with an outside software vendor, creates a top-tine master assortment product list for individual stores and store clusters. This tool won a Technology Leadership Award from Consumer Goods Technology (CGT) magazine. Anheuser-Busch’s use of IT is international. Budexchange.co.uk, hosted on BudNET, tracks key data and sales of 5,000 British outlets. The system rewards the loyalty of trade customers with Budweiser-branded support materials. Anheuser-Busch uses the data provided by the outlets in its proactive segmented marketing communications program. In a market in which overall sales are down 5.7 percent, Budweiser sales are up 7 percent. Anheuser-Busch continues to expand its use of datalinks, using its market clout to improve data gathering and data sharing. August Busch IV, president tor domestic operations, promised that â€Å"brewers and wholesalers with a clear, data-driven focus will have a distinct competitive advantage.† Market share data confirm the success of the company’s strategy – Anheuser-Busch now commands 50.1 percent at the market in 2003, up from 48.9 percent in 2002.
